ServiceArt curation for your interior.

Art procurement and curation

Art that belongs in the room.

Art does not finish a space. Placed well, it defines it. Ben Winterburn is our art curator partner and he approaches every project the same way: understanding the room, understanding the client, then finding work that belongs there.

This is not an add-on at the end of a project. Art curation happens in parallel with the design process, so the work and the interior grow together rather than one being adjusted to accommodate the other.

Ben Winterburn

Ben grew up around art. His father is world-renowned sculptor Steve Winterburn, and art has been part of his life long before it became part of his work. He brings that background to every project at Dean Heim & Co.

Ben knows which artists are doing interesting work, which pieces will hold a wall, and which commissions are worth exploring. He talks to clients the way a friend who happens to know a lot about art would, not like a gallery consultant running through a catalogue.

For projects that need something singular, he manages commissions directly with artists, from brief to installation.

What it involves.

01

Initial art brief

We discuss your tastes, what you respond to, and what the space calls for. The art brief develops alongside your interior design brief.

02

Research and sourcing

Ben researches artists and works that suit the project. Original paintings, prints, sculpture, photography, and mixed media, from established names and emerging talent.

03

Presentation and selection

We present a curated shortlist with context on each artist and work. You decide what resonates.

04

Placement and framing

Art placement is as important as the art itself. We advise on scale, height, groupings, and framing. The work should feel like it belongs in the room, not like it was added afterwards.

05

Commissioning

For certain projects, a commission is the right answer. We manage the relationship with the artist and the brief through to delivery and installation.

“Their design direction and craftsmanship were exceptional, but it was the inclusion of art and subtle, yet cost effective detailing that gave our development personality and flair.”

Meet the team
Do you work with existing collections?+

Yes. If you already own art, Ben can advise on how to display and contextualise it within a new interior scheme. Sometimes the existing collection shapes the design direction.

Is art curation only for large or high-value projects?+

No. We have helped clients with single rooms and single pieces, as well as larger projects. The value of getting it right does not change with the size of the project.

Do you work with artists directly?+

Yes. We have established relationships with a range of artists, from sculptors to painters to printmakers. For the right project, we can manage a commission directly with an artist.
